A surprising growth in UK retail sales in January has seen the largest rise in consumer spending in almost three years.

The unexpected surge suggests the economy is recovering from recent events – despite officially entering a recession only one month earlier.

The positive news of retail sales growth in January bucked the trend of doom and gloom following the release of data on 15th February that revealed Britain went into a recession at the end of 2023.

A recession occurs after two consecutive periods of shrinking economy. Data revealed the economy had declined in the third and fourth quarters of 2023, with an unexpected dip in the run-up to Christmas.

Between October and December, Office for National Statistics data showed the UK’s gross domestic product had shrunk by 0.3%, following a fall of 0.1% between July and September.

While this was bad news for the government, the news may go somewhat to restoring consumer confidence.

Retail sales growth

The positive UK retail sales figures for January have offered a glimmer of hope for beleaguered consumers and businesses. A 3.4% increase is the largest growth in retail sales since April 2021. Shoppers bought more in all sectors, apart from clothes.

The January increase was a particular surprise in light of the fact a 3.3% decrease in shopping was recorded by the ONS in December, with the usual Christmas boom not happening.

The drop in sales in December was attributed to many customers buying Christmas presents during Black Friday in November to achieve bigger discounts. However, even Black Friday hadn’t been able to prevent the recession, especially since 46% of adults surveyed for the ONS said they intended spending less on Christmas 2023 because of the high cost of living.

According to the ONS sports shops, supermarkets, department stores and household shops in particular had enjoyed “robust” trade in January – the biggest growth was experienced by supermarkets and fuel sales, the latter enjoying a 5.4% increase. Data suggests motorists were filling up because of a drop in fuel prices.

While total sales remain 1.3% below the pre-Covid pandemic levels of February 2020, the latest growth is a step in the right direction.

Is this significant for shop owners?

Economic analysts say the figures could be good news for shopkeepers and commercial property owners, as well as for the public, as it suggests the recession may be over as soon as it has begun.

Retail sales figures show household consumption makes up the biggest expenditure across the whole of the nation and could indicate overall economic growth.

As a retailer, now is the time to capitalise on the boom in sales by doing all you can to attract shoppers. Spruce up your shop front to make your premises look as inviting as possible to passers-by!

Consumer research has shown that a welcoming and attractive shop façade can enhance customer engagement, increase footfall and boost sales. It can communicate your brand image and let customers know what to expect, making your premises instantly recognisable on the high street.

Many businesses are choosing aluminium shop fronts. A durable material, aluminium is the perfect choice because it can weather the elements, while also being aesthetically pleasing.

Consumer research has revealed more than 50% of shoppers will avoid entering a store if they feel the exterior looks tatty, as they believe it reflects the goods inside. Don’t let the current retail boom pass you by because your shop looks tired!
